What is my National Insurance number?

You will be able to find your National Insurance number on either a payslip or P60.

What is my personal UTR?

Your UTR is a personalised 10-digit code from HMRC. You will find this code on a letter from HMRC concerning your personal tax or on your Personal Tax return, if you have filed this in previous years. You will need your personal UTR to be able to file your tax return.

What is my company UTR?

Your company UTR is a personalised 10-digit code from HMRC. You will find this code on a letter from HMRC regarding your relevant company or on your CT600, if you have previously filed a company tax return for previous years. Your will need your company UTR to be able to file your company tax return.

What is my VAT number?

Once your company becomes VAT registered you will be sent a personalised VAT number to help identify your company, this is made up of 11 characters.  You can find your company VAT number by either, checking your VAT registration certificate, checking your VAT return, checking your accounting software or by calling HMRC.

What is my PAYE reference?

Your PAYE can be found on a letter from HMRC regarding payroll. This can also be found on P45’s or P60’s of current or past employees. 

What is my year end accounts?

Limited companies are required to submit a set of statutory accounts annually. Your company annual accounts are prepared at the end of your company’s financial year. You can find your financial year end by searching your company on Companies House.

What is my VAT quarter end?

You can check your VAT quarter end by logging in to your HMRC account.

When is my tax return due?

Your Personal Tax return is due to be filed electronically to HMRC by 31st January. If you are sending in a paper copy to HMRC, this is due by 31st October.

When do I need to pay my Corporation Tax by?

The date by which you need to pay your Corporation Tax depends on your company year end. You have 9 months and 1 day after your year end to pay your Corporation Tax to avoid any penalties.

How do I need to pay my Corporation Tax?

You will need your 17-digit Corporation Tax payment reference. You can find this on either a ‘notice to deliver your tax return’ letter from HMRC or on your online account. You can pay your Corporation Tax by bank transfer. You can find HMRC bank details on their website.

When do I need to pay my VAT by?

Your VAT return is due to be paid one month and seven days after your quarter end.

How do I pay my VAT?

You will need your VAT reference to be able to pay your VAT. You can pay your VAT either online, via bank transfer or by setting up a Direct Debit.

When do I need to pay my Personal Tax by?

To avoid any penalties, you will need to pay your personal tax by 31st January. There may sometimes be a second payment on account which is due to be paid by 31st July.

How do I pay for my Personal Tax?

Your payment reference will be your 10-digit UTR. You can pay your tax return by bank transfer. You can find HMRC bank details on their website.

Have my accounts been submitted?

You can see whether your abbreviated accounts have been submitted to Companies House by checking their website. You can check whether your accounts have been submitted to HMRC by going on your online HMRC account.

Has my Confirmation Statement been submitted?

You can see whether your Confirmation Statement has been submitted by searching your company on Companies House. This will tell you when your next Confirmation Statement is and when this is due.

How do I get my last set of accounts?

Speak to us about our online portal. If we prepared or submitted your accounts that you require, we will be able to get this for you.

How do I get a copy of my tax return?

Speak to us about our online portal. If we submitted your tax return you require, we will be able to get this for you.

How do I get a copy of my Corporation Tax computation/CT600?

Speak to us about our online portal. If we submitted the CT600 and Corporation Tax computation you require, we will be able to get this for you.

How do I get a copy of my SA302’s?

An SA302 no longer exists. Providing your personal tax computations and HMRC tax overviews replaced this. If we submitted your tax return, we will be able to provide you with you tax computations. You will be able to access your HMRC tax overviews on your HMRC online account. If you are on our HMRC online account, we will be able to provide this information to you.

What is the best number to contact HMRC?

How long until I receive my refund from HMRC?

Roughly you should receive your refund from HMRC within 6 to 8 weeks, however, we are seeing delays across the board at this current moment. You can call HMRC helpline for updates.

I paid my tax late, what is the interest?

The interest is the set at base rate plus 2.5%. The base rate is the interest in which the Bank of England have currently set.

I need to close down my company, what do I do?

There are multiple factors that need to be considered before closing down your company e.g. any outstanding debts. We would advise you speak to a tax advisor first.

I need to add shares/ director to my company, what do I do?

To add a director you will need to update this on Companies House. You will need to login to Companies House webfiling. As well as your login details, you will also need your registration number and authentication code.

To add shares to your company, you will need to login to your Companies House account and complete an SH01 form. Once this has been completed, you will need to resubmit your Confirmation Statement.

I need to remove a director, what do I do?

To remove a director you will need to update this on Companies House. You will need to login to Companies House webfiling. As well as your login details, you will also need your registration number and authentication code.

I want to change my accounting year end, how do I do this?

To change your accounting year end you will need to update this on Companies House and HMRC. You will need to login to Companies House webfiling. As well as your login details, you will also need your registration number and authentication code. To update HMRC, you will need to call HMRC Corporation Tax helpline.

I am no longer required to file a tax return; how do I notify HMRC?

You will need to call HMRC on 0300 200 3310 to notify them that you are no longer required to complete a tax return.

I have received a late penalty for my accounts, what do I do?

If you have received a penalty letter from either Companies House or HMRC and believe the penalty in question is not correct, you can appeal this by writing to either Companies House and HMRC. You will need to explain the circumstances for why you believe this penalty in question should be revoked. If we filed your accounts, please speak to us and we can assist in this matter.

How do I pay my CIS?

You will pay your CIS the same way as you pay your PAYE. You will need your PAYE reference and can pay via bank transfer. The deadline for your CIS payment is the 22nd of every month.

How do I pay my Capital Gains Tax?

To pay your Capital Gains Tax (CGT) you will need your14-character Capital Gains payment reference number. You can pay this via bank transfer.

How long do I need to keep my records for?

You are required to keep your records for seven years after your financial year end.

When do you need my records in by?

We would always recommend getting your records in as soon as possible after the year end, however, if you please could ensure that we have your records three months before they are due to be submitted, we can then make sure they are submitted in time.

What information do I need to supply you for my accounts?

The information we will require to be able to prepare your accounts are proof of income (invoices), proof of purchases (invoices) and bank statements. Additionally, if you use any accounting software, we will need access to this.

What information do you need for my tax return?

The information we will require in order to be able to prepare your tax return is proof of income (P60 from employment or income received from rental properties), and expenses (such as rental).

Who is my accountant/point of contact?

If you are unsure who your point of contact is, please speak to our team on reception and they will be able to advise.

What date does my accounts need to be submitted by?

To avoid any penalties, your accounts are required to be submitted nine months after your financial year end.

When does my Vat need to be submitted by?

After your VAT quarter end, you need to submit your VAT return one month and 7 days after.

How do I get a copy of my payslips?

Your employer will be able to provide you with a copy of your payslips. Alternatively, you can request your payslips from HMRC for any employment within the last 5 years.

What is my Companies House authentication code?

Your Companies House authentication code is a 6-figure code and can be found on a letter from Companies House. This code is required to be able to file information online such as your accounts and Confirmation Statement. If you can not find your authentication code, you can request Companies House resend this out. This can be done online and will take 5 working days to be received.

What is my company registered number?

This is an 8-digit code issued when a limited company is formed on Companies House. You will find your registration number either on your certificate of incorporation or on Companies House website by searching your company.

What is my partnership UTR?

Your partnership UTR is a personalised 10-digit code from HMRC. You will find this code on a letter from HMRC concerning your partnership. You will need your personal UTR to be able to file your tax return.

How do I change my registered office address?

To change your registered office address you will need to login to Companies House webfiling. You will need your login details, as well as your registration number and authentication code. Once your address has been updated on Companies House, this will automatically update your registered office address for Corporation Tax on HMRC.

How do I change my address on HMRC?

To change your address on HMRC, you will need to login to your HMRC online account. You will need to change your address on each service HMRC provides for you, i.e. Personal Tax, VAT, PAYE.

I’m recently married/divorced, how do I change my name with Companies House/HMRC?

To change your name on Companies House, you will need to login to Companies House webfiling. You will need your login details, as well as your registration number and authentication code. To change your address on HMRC, you will need to login to your HMRC online account or call HMRC to speak to an advisor.

I’ve paid a certain sort of tax to the wrong reference, what do I do? (I.E Personal Tax to their company UTR)

If you have paid your tax to the wrong reference do not panic. You will need to call the HMRC service you paid to and let them know you paid to the wrong reference and would like this to be reallocated. If you paid on time but have now accumulated interest as a result of this, once your money has been allocated to the correct place, the interest will be removed.

How long do I get to file my Confirmation Statement?

Once your Confirmation Statement becomes due to be filed, you have two weeks to file this.
