Meet Chris Lock: The Expert Behind Vortax

Chris Lock is not your average accountant. A Chartered Tax Adviser and Fellow of the ACCA, Chris brings decades of deep industry knowledge and technical expertise to every conversation. Whether you have worked alongside him or benefited from his expertise as a client, one thing is clear: Chris delivers with precision, knowledge and integrity.

But beyond the credentials, spreadsheets and financial strategy, there is a whole other side to Chris. We sat down with Chris to ask a few questions, beyond the numbers to get to know the person behind Vortax.

Chris (Custom)

Why did you decide to become an accountant/tax specialist?

I have always enjoyed problem-solving and working with numbers, but more importantly, I like helping people make sense of complex issues. Tax is often seen as daunting, and I enjoy working with clients and other professionals to provide clarity and confidence with complex transactions, guiding them through important financial decisions.

How has the accounting industry changed since you started?

Technology has transformed the profession, cloud software, automation, and digital filing are now standard. At the same time, the personal advisory side has become more important than ever, as clients increasingly want trusted guidance alongside efficiency.

What trends do you see shaping the future of accounting and tax in the next few years?

Greater digitalisation, increased HMRC scrutiny and a growing demand for specialist advice in areas such as estate planning, business sales and property structuring. I also believe collaboration between firms will continue to grow.

What do you enjoy most about being a tax specialist?

Helping clients achieve peace of mind. For many, tax is a source of stress or uncertainty. Seeing that lifted when we’ve put a clear plan in place is incredibly rewarding.

What does a typical day look like to you?

There’s no truly “typical” day, it might involve drafting detailed tax reports, leading client meetings, liaising with solicitors and accountants, preparing valuations or speaking with HMRC. The variety is one of the aspects I enjoy most.

Do you have a favourite area of tax you work in?

I particularly enjoy exit and succession planning for business owners. It is highly technical but also very personal, helping owners structure their businesses efficiently, plan for their long-term goals, and prepare for the next stage, whether that is a sale, passing the business to the next generation or winding down. This work often involves reviewing not only the business plans but also the individual’s personal objectives, while considering the interaction of key taxes such as Inheritance Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax.

What inspired you to launch Vortax?

After many years in practice, I wanted to create a firm that specialised purely in tax, providing high-quality, bespoke advice with a direct personal approach. Vortax allows me to work closely with clients and professional partners, focusing on areas where I can add real value.

Did you always want to be an accountant? How did your career begin?

Not initially. I first pursued a career as a racing driver, competing around the world in karting. I then began working in an accountancy practice, quickly realising how much I enjoyed the tax side of the work. From there, I pursued further qualifications and developed a clear focus on tax advisory.

Looking back on your career so far, what achievement are you most proud of?

Building long-term client relationships and being trusted with sensitive, high-value projects is something I’m very proud of. Qualifying as a Chartered Tax Adviser is the most prestigious tax qualification was a major milestone. More recently, founding Vortax and seeing it grow into a specialist practice with strong partnerships has been a real highlight.

What sets Vortax apart from other tax specialists?

We focus on clear, practical solutions and a very personal approach. Clients don’t just receive technical advice, they receive advice that fits their family, business and long-term plans. I also pride myself on being approachable, collaborative and proactive.

How do you stay ahead in a field that is constantly changing?

I dedicate a great deal of time to Continus Personal Development (CPD), attending specialist seminars and keeping close to upcoming legislation. I also serve as Vice-Chair on a committee with the Chartered Institute of Taxation, which allows me to engage with other professionals and stay closely connected to industry developments.

Are there any upcoming changes in the tax world that people should start preparing for now?

Yes, the inheritance tax and business/agricultural relief changes planned for April 2026, along with potential pension reforms in April 2027, will have a significant impact. Families with property or business interests should be reviewing their succession plans now rather than waiting until the rules take effect.

How does bringing a personal approach change the way clients experience tax advice?

It makes advice relevant and understandable. Instead of presenting abstract legislation, we translate it into practical outcomes for their family or business.

What is one misconception people have about accountants?

That we only deal with numbers and compliance. In reality, much of my role is advisory, strategic and people focused. It’s about solving problems, not just filling in forms.

What is the most rewarding project you have worked on?

Projects involving family businesses stand out. Helping a family restructure their business to support future plans while ensuring a smooth transition to the next generation has been particularly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in tax or accounting?

Be curious, patient and people focused. Technical knowledge is essential, but the ability to explain and apply it to real situations is what makes a great adviser.

What is a fun fact people might be surprised to learn about you?

From my motorsport days, I was British, European, and Vice World Champion in go karting, racing against past and present Formula 1 drivers.

After a busy day, how do you switch off and unwind?

I spend time with my family and enjoy getting outdoors when I can. I’m also a keen reader and gamer.  When time allows, I attempt to play golf!
